The Idea

The idea of travelling for an extended period with both our kids had been in our minds for quite some time, yet, as usual, the timing never seemed quite right. A new job offer here, a fresh project launching there, and of course, the kids starting school all presented plenty of reasons to hold back and not leap into the unexpected adventure.

But then, in the middle of 2024, that thought popped back up on our radar, and after some initial conversations, we began to realise that a timeframe was emerging that might just be ideal for our undertaking. Our daughter was about to make the jump from primary to secondary education during the summer of 2025. I had wrapped up a major project towards the end of 2024, and Sarah was independently contemplating a career change.

The more we thought about it, the clearer it became that the timing would probably never be better to embrace such an exciting journey. We started to look into the various challenges that needed to be tackled. How to take the kids out of school for an entire year? What to do with our house in our chosen hometown Leipzig, Germany? How to find a solution with my employer, who I had been happily working for?

Of course, in the beginning, there are an intemedating amount of questions and concerns, but we decided to tackle them one by one, which eventually made us move past the point of no return.
